SharePoint 2010 Training resources
Brian Gough Last night I gave a presentation at the Developers Guild on various resources available to learn how to develop against SharePoint 2010. We had a great crowd and many of the attendees asked for the slide deck. I have the deck available on a sky drive for you to down load. The deck has several links to free training resources, links to Andrew Connell’s posting about setting up your development environment, and a few companies that offer training at a cost.

Charlotte Code Camp Presentation
Brian Gough Saturday 15th was the Charlotte Code Camp, and it was a great success! We had over 370 people register, and last I heard, we had over 200 during one session.
We had 10 tracks running covering content from helping with your job, to SQL, .Net and of course SharePoint. I was very pleasantly surprised to see so many show up for my SharePoint preso, especially since SharePoint Saturday Charlotte was just a few weeks ago, and SharePoint Saturday DC was on Saturday as well.

Feature Comparison for SharePoint 2010 ( MOSS v. Foundation )
Brian Gough I have not been able to find a chart that compares the features between SharePoint Server and SharePoint Foundation so I decided I would build my own. Based on the “New” feature lists from the two product pages from Microsoft, I put together this matrix. I have included links to the pages for details about each feature.
Hopefully this will help some of you out there.

PowerPivot – Awesomeness…at a price…
Brian Gough For those of you that have been hearing about this new creature called PowerPivot, here is a link to the PowerPivot home page – http://www.powerpivot.com/

This is a very powerful tool that will enable users to create some very nice user generated BI solutions against large amounts of data, and do it quickly. There is also a PowerPivot for Excel add-in for excel 2010.

In Line Editing – Niiiiiice…. sorta..
Brian Gough Another really nice feature that can be activated for individual views, is “InLine Editing”. This is “off” by default when you create a list or new view.
Here is what the option looks like when you modify a view…
When you turn this on, it will add an new icon to the items. This icon looks a lot like the “Edit” icon you are used to seeing in 2007.
See below…
When you click on this edit icon, it will place the item into edit mode and you will see [read]. Posted: Sun, Mar 28th '10 |
Tabular view – what tabs?
Brian Gough The options available when creating custom views has changed in 2010. They have added some pretty nice options in this release.
One of the changes is the option for ‘Tabular View’. However, it is something of a misnomer because it does not actually create what the average Joe/Josephine would call a “Tab”.
You see this option when you choose to modify a view. Here is a look at it when expanded in the ‘Modify View’ page.
As the description explains, this option allows you to t [read]. Posted: Thu, Mar 18th '10 |
Who Moved My Views?
Brian Gough Hopefully this will be the first of many entries on 2010. Now that I have some breathing room and a working install of 2010, I thought it high time I got playing and writing about it.
In case you are not aware, SP 2010 now has “The Ribbon” ( for some, you will hear happy music here, for others you may here the music from the movie Psycho )
Personally, I like the ribbon a lot. Yes it is different and Yes you have to learn where everything is all over again. But once you get used t [read]. Posted: Wed, Mar 17th '10 |

Sharing documents with ‘Restricted Read’
Brian Gough I wanted to take a moment and share one way that you can let your team collaborate on documents and make them available to “end users” without having to copy the document somewhere else. After all, one of the primary goals we have is to reduce redundancy in our document storage right?
Well, depending on how SharePoint is implemented in your location there can be several scenarios. I will describe just one here in case it may help any of you.
In my scenario, the company has several levels to [read]. Posted: Mon, Nov 16th '09 |

Brian Gough Well, another great community event was a rousing success. Many thanks to Michael Lotter and Josh Carlisle for putting this together and making it happen.
We had a nice mix of SharePoint 2007 and got a look at different areas of 2010 as well.
Some great speakers and great participants made this a very worthwhile event. I heard a lot of very positive feedback and folks were very appreciative of the speakers time and efforts.

SharePoint Designer – 2010 – New AND Improved
Brian Gough There are quite a few enhancements made to SharePoint Designer 2010. This is truly a Enterprise tool now with some great improvements. Here are some of the highlights…
Ribbon – As with everything else 2010 related, SPD now has the ribbon when editing. For some this is good news, others, not so much. personally, I like the ribbon interface and am happy to have it.
UI improvements – there are quite a few UI improvements, for example, when creating a workflow, th [read]. Posted: Tue, Nov 3rd '09 |
SharePoint 2010, web parts and you…
Brian Gough Well SharePoint Conference 2009 is over and man there is a lot of SP 2010 information being released. I already have a long list of items to blog on to keep you as informed as I can.
In a previous posting I touched on one means of creating SharePoint web parts using Visual Studio 2010 based on an article by Steve Fox, VS 2010 – disappointment.
Everything in that article still holds true an my opinion has not changed, but I did want to give you more info on VS2010.

Custom Forms – Role trimming the columns
Brian Gough On Saturday October 10th, I conducted a Hands-On-Lab for creating custom display and edit forms using SharePoint Designer 2007. This Lab was part of the Enterprise Developers Guild’s 9th Code Camp!
It was a great turn out. We had 234 attendees, and ran 9 tracks of excellent content! Thanks to our sponsors, Code Camp Sponsors, every attendee was able to take home a book, and they had a nice eco-friendly bag from Wrox press to carry it in!
My lab ran for 1 hour so I was not able to cover t [read]. Posted: Mon, Oct 12th '09 |
VS 2010 – disappointment
Brian Gough I just read through the blog post from Steve Fox, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee309510.aspx, where he shows what SharePoint web part development will be like in VS 2010. I have to say I am rather disappointed.
What it boils down to is that instead of doing it right, MS has decided to integrate a solution created By Jan Tielens called a ‘Smart Part’. http://weblogs.asp.net/jan/archive/2005/02/17/375139.aspx. This allows you to create a Web User Control ( .ascx ) and w [read]. Posted: Thu, Oct 1st '09 |

Checkbox required?….Yes, No, maybe so…?
Brian Gough I have had several folks ask me why they cannot make the ‘Yes/No Checkbox’ data type a required field so I thought I would put it down on “paper” ( e-paper??) anyway….
It makes sense when you stop and think about it a bit. There are two possible values that this can have, Checked (Yes) or Un-checked (No).
It will ALWAYS have to have one of those two values. There is no option for an “empty” Yes/No Checkbox. So in a way, it is “required” by defa [read]. Posted: Tue, Sep 15th '09 |

Using ‘Send To’ context menu option
Brian Gough OK gentle reader, this is a long one, so grab your double-caf-half-caf-diet latte and get comfortable… here we go…
One of the options available to a document library item is the “Send To” option found in the context menu.
This offers several choices as you can see and another option can be made available that is not shown yet. First we will touch on what is shown above…

Workflow whoas… er… woes..
Brian Gough It has been a long time since I have been forced to use the Out Of the Box workflows in MOSS and I am sorry to say, I am a bit un-amused.
Working with a document library, I have major and minor versioning enabled, require approval, and must check out to edit.
Using the OOB ‘Approval’ workflow, I created a workflow that is to be triggered whenever a Major Version is published. This is an option to select when setting up the workflow.
When I edit a document and save it I am prese [read]. Posted: Tue, Sep 1st '09 |
Governance? We don’t need no stinkin Governance…
Brian Gough I have been on a contract for a large retailer recently, and seeing the issues they are facing currently prompted me to write this little rant.
I’m sure many of you have heard statements similar to these…
“We won’t need a real governance plan, the site owners can manage their sites themselves..” or
“We will add a governance plan later; let’s just get it installed so we can start using it.”
This company installed MOSS with the intent of releasing it [read]. Posted: Thu, Aug 27th '09 |

SharePoint on a Domain Controller
Brian Gough Many of you that have been in the SharePoint world know that it is not recommended to install SharePoint on your Domain Controller. I recently had to compile a list of the reasons WHY this is a bad thing to educate and inform a client. Well, maybe my choice of search terms was poor, but it was not an easy thing to find a list of the issues/concerns around loading SharePoint on a DC. Many folks have mentioned it in their blogs, but most just say ‘Microsoft does not recommend it’, so t [read]. Posted: Thu, Jul 16th '09 |
