SharePoint Is Slow On Isolated Environments

This is an interesting case that was solved thanks to the help of Nitsan Raz – an all mighty system administrator and SharePoint admin. Problem So I was asked to investigate a performance problem at one of my regular clients. Office Web Apps Starts Technical Preview Today

Today Microsoft has started a closed technical preview program for Office Web Apps. Apparently it will be accessible via (and integrated with) SkyDrive – so that’s great. Juggling with Site Collections and Managed Paths

After applying SP2 on a MOSS farm, search indexing stopped working. We were getting errors like: ”The object was not found. (The item was deleted because it was either not found or the crawler was denied access to it.)” Googling the error, we found out that the problem is not appearing if you have a site collection in the root path of our web application (in example http://myserver/ ). Explorer View doesn’t work on port 80

Today I visited a client that has built a simple windows application, that works with files from SharePoint based on their UNC. (something like \\mySharePoint\MySite\MyDocLib\MyDoc.docx) Everything worked fine until he tried to work with another web application that’s on port 82. You would presume that changing the UNC path to \\mySharePoint:81\MySite\MyDocLib\MyDoc.docx will do the trick.. But no. It appears that UNC access and drive mapping are one of the features that’s exclusive to the [read].

Import Spreadsheet Error

Here’s a quick one: If you want to import excel file to SharePoint (create->import spreadsheet), you have to have a site collection provisioned in the root managed path in order to connect via excel. If not, you will get “Method ‘Activate’ of object ‘_Worksheet’ failed” error. Today the SharePoint Team has announced that IE6 will no longer be supported in SharePoint 2010! A bit about IE6’s bad reputation: IE6 has always been the most hated piece of software around. It has lots of bugs, security issues, instability issues, doesn’t fully support modern web standards and the list goes on. This is a tool that scans your SharePoint farm, and produce a report with all the issues that might be problematic when upgrading to SharePoint 2010\WSS4. This is very interesting.. Service Pack 2 for 2007 Office System Was Announced

Service Pack 2 for the 2007 Office System Products was just announced (not released). So far the announcement contains a limited list of features that was compiled by asking “the individual teams in Office to come up with a list of changes that they were most proud of and felt would be most beneficial”. Copied folders are not indexed bug

Problem + Steps to reproduce: Take a folder (SPFolder object) in a SharePoint list (or Document library). Make a copy of the folder in any of the following methods: Explorer view. SharePoint Designer. Code: SPFolder.CopyTo(string path). Start an incremental crawl to index that folder. The folder will not get indexed. Even if you add new items (or documents) to the copied folder, it will not get indexed with incremental crawl. Workaround: If you want to make sure it is being indexed, start [read].

SharePoint Calendar Hard Limit

SharePoint’s calendar has a hard limit of 1000 items per calendar month. (this is not documented) I am not calling this a bug, because it seems intentional and planned. I am calling this a HARD limit, because 1000 is actually the exact number for upper boundary. To demonstrate, I wrote a script that populates a calendar list with events, and let it create over 1000 events. I then saw that only 1000 items are shown, the 1001st item will not be displayed. Visual Studio extensions for Windows SharePoint Services (aka VSeWSS) is out for CTP in a new version - 1.3. The full list of new features is listed below. Tow annoying frequent developing activities, that now should be easy to do, are the ability to refactor Web Part names, and to include assemblies in the solution manifest. A new player in the field of online collaboration

Yesterday, Apple has announced a new web based service called iWork.com aimed for online collaboration. Getting Query String Parameters with JavaScript in SharePoint

The JSRequest class is a JavaScript object that lives on all SharePoint Pages, and allows us to simply and quickly get query string parameters using JavaScript. Collapsible Web Parts

Here is something cool I have recently made. It's an add on to SharePoint, that allows a user to temporarily collapse (or minimize) Web Parts, and restore them, by clicking on their titles. Just click on the Web Part's title to collapse, and click again to restore. Your users doesn't need any special permissions to use this (works with anonymous as well). No SharePoint personalization involved. Collapsing occurs instantly (no postback). Everything is temporary, when the user retur [read].

Getting current events from a Calendar list

You have a calendar list. You want to query it for events that happen right now. Not today, not this week, right this moment. Yes, including reoccurring events. I really thought it would be easier, or at least hoped to find a working example somewhere... Anyway, here is the CAML that I ended up with:

SharePoint Designer Data Form Web Part apostrophe bug

Problem: You try to use a Data Form Web Part (Data View Web Part) to display a document library in an XSLT view. You find out that documents that include an apostrophe character (') in their file name, cannot be opened or viewed. (There might be other problematic characters beside apostrophe, I haven't checked that) Steps to reproduce: Create a document library. Add some files with apostrophe in their name to the library. Using rad Editor for MOSS Lite in Publishing Pages (WCM)

Update: After writing this, I found out that there are detailed instructions for this in the official documentation that you can download from telerik's site. HOWEVER, I haven't found anything online when I searched for the first time, so I decided to publish it even so. I have written before about rad Editor for MOSS, and how great it is. Infrastructure Update for Microsoft Office Servers

Profile Pictures Library

I have created a deployment project for Steven Van de Craen's solution for managing user profile pictures from a single picture library.
About the original project: The project itself is a simple event handler that synchronizes a picture library with user profiles pictures. When a picture is added to the library, it is automatically paired with the relevant user profile. Pairing is based on the file name of the picture, which has to match the user's login name in AD. This bug was confirmed by Microsoft after we opened a "Severity A" issue on it. .NET Framework 3.5 and Infopath compatibility issue.

Bottom line: Be very careful installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 on a machine that works with custom InfoPath solutions.
One of my clients has a customized InfoPath 2007 (Not browser enabled) form, that recently went into production. As it was exposed to a lot more users, each running a different environment configuration, we began to receive complains from people who can't use the form.

Silverlight on iPhone

Just came back from Tech Ed Eilat, where I attended a session about Silverlight 2.0 by Laurence Moroney, Sr. Tech Evangelist at Microsoft. Overall it was a nice lecture, at the end there was some Q&A time so I hit Laurence with the big question: What about Silverlight support for iPhone??? What Laurence told me, is that there are some technological issues, mainly because iPhone currently runs on AMR processor. This will also require tight cooperation with Apple's development team. Filter Content Query Web Part by file type

CQWP doesn't have a "file type" property in it's filter drop down. This is how you add it: Insert a CQWP to a page and configure it as you would like. Export the web part and save it as ".webpart" file on your local computer. Open the ".webpart" file in a text editor. (I use SharePoint Designer) Look for the following line: Replace it with the following line: DocIcon,Lookup This will make the CQWP retrieve also the DocIcon field that basically include the file extention.
