SharePoint + Word + Metadata + Spaces = Death
Paul Liebrand This morning I received an interesting support ticket. The reported issue was that when clicking a document from SharePoint it would completely freeze the browser and Word. I tried it from my desk and was able to reproduce the issue. It was only occurring with a specific document.
Immediately I thought this form must be corrupted. I saved it to my local desktop and was able to open the file without any issues. Bizarre – I click the File menu (I am running Office 2010 but proble [read]. Posted: Mon, Jan 16th '12 |
Goodbye SharePoint… Hello PeopleSoft… for now…
Paul Liebrand SharePoint is a platform I am pretty passionate about and I have been doing it for many years. Unfortunately, over the past year my priorities at work have shifted to other projects and my SharePoint interactions have been limited.
2012 is going to have some new challenges and learning experiences for me. My organization has shifted my focus and I’ll be living and breathing PeopleSoft for the next year or so. This change will undoubtedly limit my interaction with SharePoint yet again.

Broken road is but a memory…
Paul Liebrand Throughout my childhood I always felt close to my brothers. But as my older brother and I started our own families that sense of brotherhood fades. We see each other at family events and in passing but we will never really get back to that point where we were as kids. When you finally realize this gap exists it is too late to make up that time. In recent conversations, we bring up fond childhood memories and relive those moments; always putting a smile on our faces. As brothers, we will always h [read]. Posted: Thu, Dec 15th '11 |
SharePoint URL Shortener
Paul Liebrand A few years ago I developed a free SharePoint URL Shortener and released it to the community. I have not had much time to go back to it since. I had some time recently and decided to add a feature that I have wanted to have for a long time and many have asked for.
With the release of 1.0.2, you can now customize the short name before it gets created. If you do not specify a name then one will be generated for you.
The following screenshots show the process:

“Set as default My Site”, “SharePoint Sites”, or “My SharePoint Sites” missing in Office 2010 on SharePoint 2007?
Paul Liebrand If your organization is rolling out Windows 7 with Office 2010 in your environment but you are still using SharePoint 2007 you might notice that the “Set as default My Site” option is no longer working. Clicking this link is crucial to enabling the Office / SharePoint integration points.
If you do not already know this, each time you click on the Open or Save menus within an Office product it looks for a special registry key under the user profile. This registry key tells Office what SharePo [read]. Posted: Tue, Sep 27th '11 |
Is it really that difficult to create numbered lists in Word?
Paul Liebrand A really poorly styled Word document lead me to write this blog post today to rant! Is this really that difficult? I see it all the time – people constantly screwing around with the numbered lists in documents. They decide to re-number something but they change the number and the rest of the numbers change, sometimes they don’t, and sometimes even half of them change.
I have seen people battle with this problem for hours! In the end, all this headache could have been avoide [read]. Posted: Mon, Sep 19th '11 |
SharePoint 2010 Analytics Reports coming up blank when customizing?
Paul Liebrand I was recently evaluating the web analytic reporting capabilities within SharePoint 2010 and ran into a strange problem. Although the reports were displaying correctly they would appear blank if I attempted to “Customize” them. After spending a few hours scouring the Internet and reading different posts and solutions I was able to piece together a solution that resolved it for me.

The launch of our company Intranet using SharePoint 2010
Paul Liebrand The old Intranet served our company well over the last 10 years. It was a gateway into employee benefits, company activity, news, etc. There were a number of issues with our old Intranet. From a technology perspective, it was running on an old version of ColdFusion. From a content perspective, there was no true structure followed so content was difficult to find.
In early 2010, a project was kicked off with a small core team, which I was not part of at the time, to redesign and rebrand the compa [read]. Posted: Tue, Aug 16th '11 |
SharePoint and the “Cannot move <filename>: Cannot read from the source file or disk.” error via Windows Explorer View
Paul Liebrand Using Windows Explorer view to copy and/or move files around is one of the most preferred methods for end-users when they are using SharePoint. It is a very familiar process because they have used it for years with network shares.
I am sure that ever person that has used the Windows Explorer view has attempted to move a file from one location to another and received the following error message:
Cannot move : Cannot read from the source file or disk.

User Profile Synchronization Database Growing Out of Control?
Paul Liebrand If you have worked with SharePoint 2010 and created a User Profile Service Application (UPA) you may have noticed that your SyncDB is growing larger each and every day. Search around the Internet, you will find posts like this:

Adobe Acrobat X and SharePoint – close, but no cigar
Paul Liebrand Adobe X was released at the end of last year and one of the feature points announced was “Native, seamless integration with Microsoft SharePoint”. On the surface, everything appears to work correctly and solved one of the main issues with Adobe Acrobat with SharePoint I blogged about in the past.
Recently discovered that it is not as seamless as we would like. Adobe X does not appear to work with the following column types:

SharePoint 2010 Markup Style Bug
Paul Liebrand We discovered a bug in SharePoint 2010 and the usage of the markup styles when you are editing a page.
To reproduce this issue, follow these instructions:
Create a new page
Click Markup Styles and select Heading 1
Type “Test 1” and press enter
Click Markup Styles and select Heading 2
Type “Test 2” and press enter
Click Markup Styles and select Heading 3
Type “Test 3” and press enter

SharePoint 2010 Toolbar Missing in Asset Picker
Paul Liebrand If you have used SharePoint 2007 and have moved to SharePoint 2010 you might have noticed that the toolbar is missing from the top of the asset picker. The user experience is horrible due to the fact that this toolbar is missing. A user needs to upload the image to the appropriate library first before they decide to edit the content. Way too many steps!
It has been confirmed by Microsoft that this is a bug and it will be fixed in Service Pack 1. They have not provided a definitive release [read]. Posted: Wed, Jan 12th '11 |
Programmatically Accessing Message Classification in Exchange 2007 in a Custom Transport Agent
Paul Liebrand Microsoft introduced the notion of Message Classification (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998599(EXCHG.80).aspx) in Exchange 2007 and Outlook 2007. This allowed an organization to classify email and then generate transport rules that routed or manipulated those messages based on that classification.
Out of the box, Microsoft provides a list of actions (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998315(EXCHG.80).aspx) that can be performed in a transport rule. One of the supported [read]. Posted: Wed, Sep 15th '10 |
Photography
Paul Liebrand I decided to create another blog that is dedicated to one of my hobbies – photography. Over the next few weeks I’ll be uploading some highlights from over the last few years that I have been doing it. Some of the photos I have upload so far include my adventures at some SharePoint conferences (featuring Steve Ballmer, Tom Rizzo, and Huey Lewis and the News), my first wedding, some 4th July fireworks shots and many more.
Please take a moment to check it out and feel free to leave a comment. [read]. Posted: Sun, Jul 25th '10 |
Simple Pattern / Solution for Cross-thread operation not valid
Paul Liebrand If you have ever done any threaded programming in WinForms you have more than likely run into the following error message at some point:
InvalidOperationException was unhandled
Cross-thread operation not valid: Control ‘’ accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.
This exception is normally displayed while running in DEBUG mode. In release mode, everything appears to run as expected but at some point you will definitely run into a thread deadlock issue.

Document is locked for editing – Part 2
Paul Liebrand In 2008 I made a post about the infamous “locked for editing” message many people experience while using Office with documents stored in SharePoint. This post addressed the issue that can occur outside the normal “locking” mechanism Office and SharePoint.
I recently had a problem where I attempted to edit an Excel spreadsheet and I was presented by the following message:

Devon and Christina – Almansor Court, Alhambra
Paul Liebrand Devon and Christina’s wedding was the very first wedding I have ever been hired to shoot. As an aspiring photographer I was extremely nervous but they had the confidence in me to pull it off. Without a doubt, this was the most stressful photo shoot I have ever done but I think it all came together at the end. I still have much to learn both around my camera and shooting weddings in general.

Project Server 2007 and SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services Issues
Paul Liebrand I ran into an issue attempting to get Project Sever 2007 working with SQL Sever 2008 Analysis Services and thought I would create a post about it in case other people are experiencing the same issue.
The first thing to note is the article on TechNet are written as if everything is installed on the same server; that is not the case in my environment. High level overview of my environment:

The SharePointMagazine.net site has a tremendous amount of great content from many guest authors and you should check it out of you have not already.

My ClusterShot Photo Store
Paul Liebrand I came across a service called ClusterShot a few months ago that gives photographers an outlet for selling their photos. The service allows a photographer to set a price but also accept offers. With the ability to import photos from other services such as RSS and Flickr it made it real easy for me to bring my photos into the service.
ClusterShot can be used for free with some limitations. I recently decided to upgrade my account to PRO status which gives me a “store front” and allows me to f [read]. Posted: Sat, Feb 20th '10 |
My friend IDrive
Paul Liebrand A few years ago after I experienced numerous hard drive failures and almost losing my entire photo collection I decided to invest in an online backup strategy. After evaluating a few options, I decided to go with IDrive and I have been extremely happy.
It costs about $4.95 per month for 150 GB of storage. One thing to note is that each file can have up to 30 different versions and the versioned files do not count against your storage limit.
The versioned files saved me a few months back when my [read]. Posted: Sun, Feb 14th '10 |
“Accidentally on Purpose” by Swift Dixshun
Paul Liebrand Swift Dixshun recently released his latest hip-hop album, “Accidentally on Purpose.” Why do I care? Although I am not the biggest fan of hip-hop, this album has some personal significance to me. My younger brother, Mark Liebrand, produced 2 songs and recorded about 6 others from this album.
This is a momentous accomplishment for him and if you are in the least bit interested in hip-hop or simply want to support their movement, check this album out!

UPDATED – Open Text Email Management for Exchange 10 – “What happened to all my archived email?”
Paul Liebrand Nothing like receiving an email from an end-user that reads:
Why do I receive a message from Outlook that says “The owner deleted the document on the server. Please contact your administrator.” on most of my emails that have been archived?
Let me take a step back for a moment. About two months ago, we implemented Open Text’s Email Management for Exchange 10, latest and greatest release, in our organization. The method we chose to archive email was via Microsoft Exchange 2007 Managed fold [read]. Posted: Wed, Jan 6th '10 |
SharePoint Conference 2009 (“SPC09”) Postmortem
Paul Liebrand The Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2009 (“SPC09”) has finally come to a close and I hope to wrap up my thoughts about what I saw at the conference in this post.
I first need to say that this has by far been the best conference I have attended. This is not necessarily because of all the great content but more of the social aspects that surfaced during the conference. SharePoint 2010 Conference Keynote thoughts
Paul Liebrand Generally speaking, most of what was shown during the keynote can be seen in the SharePoint 2010 Overview videos available on the website. However, here are a few things that caught my attention that I am not sure I knew:
Full development support on Windows Vista/Windows 7
Development Sandbox environments

Gmail Productivity Tip
Paul Liebrand I must have been living under a rock to only have been shown a feature of Gmail that has been around for awhile. I am not even sure what the “feature” is called but I am going to totally start using it when signing up for sites that may potentially generate a lot of spam.
Essentially, if you Gmail address is first.last@gmail.com you can add a plus (+) after your alias and it will still make it to your account. For example, first.last+spamtest@gmail.com.
