Develop your own Windows Service

Writing a Windows Service is very easy. Deploying it with a Setup is an easy task as well. But be careful what option you set for the failure behavior! In my case I installed the service with “Windows Installer XML (WiX) toolset”. Do not use critical as ErrorControl value. It will force a reboot of the server, if the services fails to start. Fortunately booting with “Last known good configuration” worked for me and I could uninstall the service… [read].

Disable Loopback Check?

A while ago Microsoft released an update, which prevents that you can log on locally to a website which has a FQDN. To resolve issues with e.g. the crawling a KB article has been published. You receive error 401.1 when you browse a Web site that uses Integrated Authentication and is hosted on IIS 5.1 or a later version You can disable the loopback check completely, or just for the used FQDNs. Control.ClientID has wrong value

An ASP.NET Controls has a ClientID property. SharePoint Controls inherit from the ASP.NET Controls. The property will give you the ID, the rendered control will have in the HTML source. An item level restore solution is available at AvePoint. The DocAve SQL Restore Controller care restore items, sites and site collections from a SQL or DPM database, or a backup. If you click on the download link, you have to provide an email address. A download link will be sent to you. The files you have to download are 414 MB (Manager) and 40 MB for the Agent. If you ran into the expired license issue after applying the Service Pack 2, you will be happy to know Microsoft has released an update to resolve the issue. .NET 3.5 and Silverlight

Using AJAX or Silverlight from within SharePoint in Webparts requires you to modify the web.config to support the technology. I don’t mention that you have to install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and Silverlight to be able to use it… Instead of changing the web.config manually (.NET Framework 3.5 AJAX und Silverlight in SharePoint registrieren von Fabian Moritz), you can use my features. SPQuery with lookup columns returns no data

An SPQuery for lookup columns should be easy. Start the famous U2U Caml Editor, configure your query, and query the list. This query will get a result if the lookup column stores something like “1;#1”. But if its value is e.g. “1;#Title”, the query will not return an item. So what can we do about it? Solution deployment fails

Deploying a SharePoint solution (.wsp file) to a SharePoint farm should be easy. Even if the farm contains 4 SharePoint Servers. Just stsadm –o addsolution –filename solution.wsp. Some waiting so the deployment is done on every server, and we should be happy. Well, the result was an Error in the solution status. Navigation for Wikis

The Wiki functionality SharePoint offers is great for quickly writing down stuff. It is often used for Server documentation. Creating new pages is easy, and you can link pages. The ability to format the text is nothing fancy, but most of the time enough :-) Uploading images can be done with my custom field type, which stores images and documents in existing libraries. Installation of SharePoint SP2 fails

During the update, you can run into the following exception: Exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Address Windowing Extensions (AWE) is not supported in this edition of SQL Server. Can you take a look at it?” A couple of times I’ve been asked to fix a CD-Rom, which has disappeared from the explorer. In the device manager it had an error code 39. How To get the default page from a website

Incompatible Web Part markup detected

For months the Webpart could be installed through a solution/feature without any problems. Then I had to change something in the code. When I tried to upgrade the solution to see the changes, the Webpart could not be added to a page anymore. The assembly is deployed to the GAC through the solution. It has been upgraded. Looking at the xml file in my solution did not show any errors. It looks fine. The features deployed a .webpart in the Webpart catalog. That looks fine as well. So what caused th [read].

Ten Themes for SharePoint in VSeWSS Projects

A couple of days ago Microsoft released 10 themes for SharePoint. They provided solutions for you, so that you can build features to install and deploy the themes on your SharePoint farm. As I’ve mentioned earlier, the SPD can be downloaded from Microsoft for free. All you have to do is register before you can download the SharePoint Designer. So don’t wait, and get it :-) Please remember, that if you modify a SharePoint page, it will be stored in the database and loose its reference to the template. This is called unghosted. Issues in WSS V2

Responses to items in an Issue list (SPListIssue) are new version in WSS V3. WSS V2 lacks the ability to use versions for lists. Apply a LDAP Filter for User Profile Import

With MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007) you can import user profiles from an Active Directory or LDAP. By default, it will import user profiles from the current domain. Custom Field – Upload Files and Images

If you know my WikiWebpart or DiscussionListUploader, you know that there are some occasions where you want to upload a file, and place a link to it to another field. The above solutions are only for the certain list type. My new custom field can be used on every list or library! Just add the field to one of your lists/libraries: It will automatically try to find local libraries for documents and images to store the uploaded files and images. The file manifest.xml does not exist in the solution package

Creating a SharePoint solution file (which is a cab file renamed to wsp), can cause problems if the size of the file would exceed the space on an 1.44MB disk. 1.44MB? What the…? The default values for makecab, which is used for generating the cab file, will prevent the creation of a valid cab file :-( Thanks to Eugene Rosenfeld for finding this one. [read].

  Dieser Post ist noch ein Nachtrag zur SharePoint Konferenz in München. Mein Fazit zur Veranstaltung: Eine Gelungene Veranstaltung mit hochkarätigen Vorträgen! Deshalb geht mein Dank an den Veranstalter mit seinem Team, die verschiedenen Sprecher und natürlich an die Teilnehmer der Konferenz. Ein Gedankenaustausch durch zahlreiche Gespräche zwischen den Beteiligten war jederzeit möglich. Allein diese Tatsache ist auf Konferenzen ein Grund zur Teilnahme. Finally I found the time to enable the Enhanced Blog Edition on my blog. As you can see, the layout did change :-) The EBE also brings some new functionality like comment spam detection, trackbacks and a cleaner RSS feed. Versioning files in a document library

If you open a file from a document library, modify it and save it, you will get a new version. This is what I had expected. But if you open up a document do some changes, save it, change some more and save it, you will only get one new version. Not as many as I had expected because I have saved the document like 10 times. As I posted earlier, MS was working on a tool which will analyze your code if you are coding against SharePoint. Here is a short description: It provides assistance in correctly disposing of certain SharePoint objects to help you follow published best practice. This tool may not show all memory leaks in your code. Further investigation is advised if you continue to experience issues. Upgrading a solution fails

In a SharePoint farm with multiple servers, features have to be deployed to every server. No problem you would think. That is why we got solutions and deploy them with stsadm. SharePoint will do the rest. But what do you do if you got an error during the deployment process? In my case the error was: A deployment or retraction is already under way for the solution xyz, and only one deployment or retraction at a time is supported.
