Building a SharePoint Team
Richard Harbridge
One of the big challenges in the industry right now (both for internal environments and consultancies) is hiring and developing a SharePoint team. In a recent podcast with Brett and Rob we discussed this very challenge and things you should consider when building up the people resources for a SharePoint implementation. Here is a direct link to the mp3 as well. Right click this link and ‘save as’ if you want to listen to it offline. If you haven’t listened to the SharePoint Pod [read].

When are people going beyond SharePoint for social functionality?
Richard Harbridge
For many people the built in SharePoint 2010 social capabilities, while limited, meet the needs of the business. For many organizations still piloting or evaluating the use of social technology and SharePoint’s limited feature set meets their business needs. However there are many others who aren’t satisfied by the capabilities provided by SharePoint and are looking for a more robust feature set. This article will dig a little more into the options available for organizations and my personal [read].

Evaluating Cloud Providers: Tools and Questions
Richard Harbridge
Struggling with evaluating cloud providers? Interested in moving to the cloud but not certain what the risks are and what you need to consider? This article is focused around sharing some tools and techniques I have found to help when performing the often difficult task of comparing or evaluating cloud providers. On a fairly frequently basis I am asked about my opinion about one hosting provider, or one cloud provider versus another. Of course my response as a consultant is “It Depends”. It [read].

Intranet Tools: The User Adoption Activity Listing
Richard Harbridge
I have released a new tool that I use when working with clients supporting effective user adoption. This tool is a listing of over 50 commonly used User Adoption Activities. The purpose of this listing is to help highlight other activities or methods organizations are using to improve user adoption. You may find some activities in the listing that resonate with your organizational culture and business need, and hopefully the short description will help make sense of how to go about executing or [read].

Intranet Tools: The Intranet Component Listing
Richard Harbridge
I have released a new tool that I use when working with clients defining key pages within their Intranets. This tool is a listing of over 50 commonly found Intranet components. The purpose is for the business to pick out the components they want on their page, then to prioritize these components, and take this information to develop the first wireframes and mockups of these key pages. As always I am trying my hardest to find the time to share some of the tools and techniques I have found that wo [read].

Update to SharePoint Development Standards
Richard Harbridge
The SharePoint Development Standards have been updated with a few minor SharePoint 2010 specific tweaks, the addition of database access recommendations, and a PDF/Word version of them for easier download. One of the secret hopes I have for updating this set of standards is that many community thought leaders and SharePoint experts will tell me what I am still missing, what is not current/accurate for SharePoint 2010, and perhaps even ask for updates to other standards. There are quite a few mor [read].

Lately I have been really enjoying the format and content on Focus.com. In particular the SharePoint discussions have been great. The format works well for surfacing great comments and answers to interesting questions. What is SharePoint?
Richard Harbridge
Last week at SPTechCon Ruven Gotz and I delivered a full day Practical SharePoint Information Architecture workshop. One of the questions we asked (and then answered) was “What is SharePoint?”. This is an exploration into the responses we received and we thought would be worth sharing. What sounds deceivingly simple can lead to exhaustive minutes or even hour long explanations. SharePoint ROI: Why it’s important and you should care.
Richard Harbridge
During Best Practices I did a podcast recording with Hilton Giesenow where we discussed ROI and SharePoint. It was extremely fun doing it, and Hilton had some great questions. (I would love to hear someone interview him!). The podcast covers the following: How to build up a SharePoint team (and why it’s important). Why someone would want to measure return on investment (ROI). The importance of measurement. Dangers of measurement. How to improve measurement. How to measure SharePoint’ [read].

The Human Pipeline: Why Should Your Organization Use Social Media, Collaboration, and Networking?
Richard Harbridge
“Why should your organization use social media, social collaboration and social networking (and how can they do it better)?” This is a challenging question that I have heard many times. SharePoint is NOT a Silver Bullet
Richard Harbridge
SharePoint is awesome isn’t it? Every day we see projects and business challenges that SharePoint helps us overcome. It’s kind of hard not to begin re-actively saying “SharePoint” as the answer to so many corporate challenges especially as our understanding of what the platform can do matures. This poses a very real danger as SharePoint is not the best tool or solution for every challenge. How do you mitigate the risk this danger poses? Why Leveraging SharePoint Blog Features For Intranet News Is A Great Idea
Richard Harbridge
Almost every intranet site has news articles of some sort. One very useful technique when building out how news articles work in SharePoint is to use a blog site for hosting the news. This works for both SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010. Why a blog site instead of say pages in a publishing site, list items, individual documents, or some other method? A blog allows for users to comment on news items. This way it can be more than just a one way discussion and people can contribute more inform [read].

I am sure there are posts out there (I found Geoff’s one here) but just in case I wanted to write a quick post highlighting some important aspects about SharePoint WebParts, and the WebPart Gallery (for SharePoint 2007 AND 2010). What does SharePoint do for you?
Richard Harbridge
One thing anyone who works in the SharePoint space gets asked regularly (or asks) is how are other people using SharePoint? Not always from a strategic level, but more from a common user perspective. After discussing this common question with Bonnie Surma we decided the creation of a Survey would help not only us, but many of you share your answers to this question. SharePoint Standards and the SharePoint Standards Project

It was entitled SharePoint Terminology and you can read it here. So what has changed in SharePoint 2010? What new terms should we be aware of? The Importance of ‘Tuning’ for a More Successful SharePoint

One of those things that I have seen from time to time is organizations who have implemented SharePoint not examining the usage statistics, feedback, surveys, or measuring user adoption correctly or on a continual basis. Updating Content Editor Content with Word

There are a number of reasons why users might be using content editors for page content in a SharePoint site. SharePoint Not Always “The Answer”
Richard Harbridge
Dun dun dunnnn. As the post title suggests I want to talk briefly about a mentality that I am starting to see pop up everywhere and I want to hopefully illustrate that while SharePoint is totally “sexy awesome” it is not always the best choice for solving an issue. Anyone who has worked with SharePoint or any technology for that matter for a long enough time understands that it is easy to get into the mentality of ‘thinking SharePoint’. That is the mentality that we immed [read].

Richard Harbridge
Don’t worry I won’t go into all the details. The original announcement is located here: http://blogs.technet.com/mu/archive/2009/04/14/service-pack-2-for-2007-microsoft-office-system-due-april-28th.aspx all the interesting details can be found in the above post as well. Suffice to say lots of important updates (which we all love). Don’t forget that many of the fixes for known issues can be found in the latest cumulative update for SharePoint Server. http://support.microsoft.com [read].

Customize Look And Feel With Calculated Columns
Richard Harbridge
Ever wanted to ‘Color Code’ a SharePoint calendar? Or have certain list items display differently then other list items based on their column values? One of those things that every user needs is the ability to customize the look and feel of many SharePoint elements, and sometimes it just doesn’t make sense to wait for a SharePoint team, developers, or architects to work out a long term solution. Sometimes you just need a quick and dirty way of doing something as a one off to illustrate a p [read].

SharePoint Designer Free!
Richard Harbridge
While this is all over the net I figured I should also post it here. SharePoint Designer which was previously a product that replaced front page is now a completely free downloadable product. This tool can help ANY user who uses SharePoint to expand their capabilities. From page editing, page layout and master page creation to the implementation of custom workflows this is an excellent tool for business and technical users to use in their SharePoint environment. Keep in mind that extra usage rep [read].

Development Specializations, Enhancements, and Experience
Richard Harbridge
I found this interesting and can see many different benefits and advantages to using visual organization techniques and spatial representation for development activities. Code Canvas: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Code-Canvas-Spatial-Representations-of-Code-107958.shtml This is a very important concept and I really hope it goes much further than this in the coming years. We need more creative ideas like this to take place. The concept of being able to see visually represented relationships in c [read].

SharePoint Ads
Richard Harbridge
Many people have probably already heard this via Joel’s blog or the twitter community but I just wanted to reiterate it here. http://www.sharepointads.com/ A wonderful new site/initiative to help SharePoint specific organizations and bloggers/communities to gain mutual benefit from one another through advertising. There are two things I want to talk about on this - Why is this so awesome? What does this mean? The first is the obvious growth of the SharePoint community over the past few yea [read].

Social Enterprise, Social Computing, Social Technology and All That Jazz
Richard Harbridge
Over the past several weeks I have had the pleasure of speaking with and hearing from many people passionate and experienced in the social computing world. The message everyone is giving from the general public, to the successful corporations and competitors to the companies who specialize in this emerging/growing field of Social Computing seems to be pretty consistent. If you don’t learn it, understand it, and begin taking part in more social computing. You will fall behind and lose competiti [read].

Free SuperPreview - Start Testing All IE Versions on One Box
Richard Harbridge
For those who might not have watched the notes etc from yesterday’s MIX keynote (http://live.visitmix.com). One of the nice features of vNext expression blend is it’s ability to test cross browser in the program. This is a very slick feature that saves time, and lives. Lives because any css designer, or developer who does a lot of branding can be driven to murder from browser specific css issues. The best part? You don’t have to wait until the next version of Expression Web to [read].

Understanding Field Controls and Web Parts
Richard Harbridge
Andrew just had his new MSDN article on Field Controls vs Web Parts, and their application in publishing sites released on msdn. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd571480.aspx If you have, or are planning on building a publishing site this is an extremely important article for you to read as it clearly outlines many of the reasons why field controls may be a better choice than webparts when designing and setting up your publishing sites. Great work from Andrew on making this information m [read].

Canvas for OneNote <3
Richard Harbridge
I am in love with Canvas for OneNote. http://www.officelabs.com/projects/canvasforonenote/Pages/default.aspx?id34kndf Canvas for OneNote allows you to basically navigate around and work in your OneNote workbooks in a much more visual manner than the classic tab system of OneNote. I have never been good with tabs. In fact if you came to my office you would notice that every single bit of wall space is covered with diagrams and notes. This is how I work. I even have a pattern, the important things [read].

Projector + Sensors + Human Interaction = A Great Interface Idea
Richard Harbridge
This talk has been creating a big splash at TED and I absolutely think it’s an exciting possibility. I highly recommend giving it a quick view (less than 9 minutes total). http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/pattie_maes_demos_the_sixth_sense.html The key is the low cost, it being available anywhere, and it being the next step (probably) in mobile surface technology. Hope you enjoy as much as I did, Richard Harbridge [read].

Style Group of Webparts, or Single Webpart (CSS Branding Tip/Trick)
Richard Harbridge
Heather Solomon has always given a ton of support and advice to the community around SharePoint branding. Recently she did a post on how to style for an individual webpart or group of webparts that uses css attribute selectors. http://www.heathersolomon.com/blog/articles/Controlling-Single-Web-Parts-with-CSS.aspx Absolutely clever thinking and a must read for anyone doing SharePoint branding. I just wish I had thought of this a few months ago. Best of luck in your branding, Richard Harbridge [read].

Commerce Server 2009 and SharePoint (SharePoint E-Commerce)
Richard Harbridge
I am sure anyone out there who has dealt with E-Commerce is  aware of Microsoft Commerce Server (if you aren’t check it out). Way back in 2007 Microsoft released a nice white paper describing the integration between MOSS 2007 and Commerce Server 2007 (can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2AEB1A5E-43B8-483B-8CB2-86C0E82BF0AB&displaylang=en).
