Rule Settings in MDT 2010
MDT 2010 as you have seen is very customizable and you can stop some screens showing with the rules available in MDT this will cut down on the amount of input required during the operating system install. Theses inbuilt rules are quite limited so below you will find many more that you can add.

Adding an application to your MDT installation
The next thing we will do is add Office 2010 to the base image this is not a necessary step at the moment so if you deploy applications using a 3rd party tool you can skip this step. Open the Deployment workbench and the MDT Deployment Share section and right click on the applications sub section and choose “New Application”

Adding a Base Image to MDT 2010
The next step is now to add a base image to your MDT deployment.
Expand the deployment shares and right click Operating Systems and select ‘Import Operating System’
I will choose the Full set of source files option and for this I will need the windows 7 DVD so click next

Microsoft Expression Sketchflow

At Twynham we always find the best way to start a new SharePoint project is to get it drawn out, preferably by the end user. This can come back to us in many forms from a pencil and paper sketch through to a fully blown Visio diagram.
I stumbled across this video that shows off Expression SketchFlow, it does look really really good for rapidly prototyping sites or applications/web parts.

Office Web Apps Available on Windows Live

On the 8th June 2010 Microsoft made available via their online Live service the office 2010 web Apps, these online apps are only available in the UK, US, Ireland and Canada currently but on the 15th June will be online for the rest of the world. These are the same applications that are available to SharePoint 2010 users Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint

Using Microsoft Word 2010 to blog on Wordpress

This is a small test post to try out the feature in Word (2007 or 2010) that allows you to post straight to a blog from word.
Make sure that in your wordpress admin section you have XML-RPC enabled. This is found under http://blogname/wp-admin/options-writing.php
Then in Word go to file (what they also call ‘backstage’), select Save & Send, Publish Blog Post. Fill out the fields such as blog URL and you’re ready to post.

Backing Up Exchange 2007 and 2010 with Windows Server Backup

One of the big outcry’s in the Exchange world was with the release of Exchange 2007 and Server 2008 and the omission of the ability to backup and flush your Exchange logs, this meant that a lot of Exchange admins had to go out and purchase a 3rd party backup tool, with previous versions of Exchange and Windows server all backups could be done with the tools built into windows, but this was taken away, but now I am pleased to say that this feature is now available again.

Opening PDFs in SharePoint 2010

If you have your nice SP2010 setup you may notice that when you go to open a PDF file it prompts you to save it rather than opening.
This is really annoying and would send everyone here at the school completely bananas! Not to mention the fact that we try to get everything on SharePoint only to force people to save it to their own area!

Changes in SharePoint 2010 RTM Web Apps

Previously I posted about where’s the save in the SharePoint 2010 Web Apps well today SharePoint 2010 became available on MSDN for download so I am pleased to report that the missing save is almost back, in the Excel web app as you can see from the image below you now have a “Save As” button
But no save, as for OneNote and PowerPoint no save but you do now have an Undo and Redo buttons across all the web apps so a slight improvement for those people that love the save button.

Well we finally got there today Microsoft announced the RTM of SharePoint 2010, Office 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010. Volume licence customers will be able to download from April 27th initially in English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, and Dutch via the Volume Licensing Service Center. If you have web apps set up on SharePoint 2010 (a nifty feature I think!) you will notice that office documents in a library will not always open in the browser but will open up the full fat office programme.
To make sure that your documents open using the browser app then go into the doc lib settings, click advanced settings then check the radio button to open in browser!
The defaut behaviour will now be set to open in Web Apps in the browser!

SharePoint Server 2010 OOTB web Parts

In the post yesterday SharePoint Foundation OOTB web Parts I said that I would cover the web parts available with SharePoint Server 2010 for a comparison of the two versions. With the server version there are 11 categories but in SharePoint Foundation there are only 5 which is very understandable when you compare a free version to a fully featured server application that can support millions of users. Internet Explorer 9 and SharePoint 2010

Today I found on the Microsoft site the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview so with the release of SharePoint 2010 round the corner I thought a perfect time to try the two together. And I am very pleased to say that they do work very well together as the screenshots below, I did try only a limited number of the SharePoint 2010 features but of all of the ones that I did try there was only one failure that was with the word Web App which did not save. Remote Program Delivery through SharePoint; the Front End.

In Dave’s previous post he talked about the back-end for our delivery of remote programs. I’m going to explain how we then surfaced this through SharePoint.
For those of you that have set up remote programs you will probably be aware of the web part for it, we found that using this didn’t give us very much flexibility in which programs are surfaced. So we came up with a couple of other methods.

Easy Access To STSADM

Hands up who is fed up with navigating to “c:\program files\common files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\bin\” just to use the STSADM tool?

Many people have many different opinions on this subject. Is it wise to virtualise SQL? I think it is fine. I was once not so sure but visiting SharePoint best practices conference last year as well as a data management event I now feel pretty confident. Also with our beast of a hyper-v setup I can have more RAM in a virtual SQL box than I could ever dream of in a physical server!

Finding Stale Accounts in Active Directory

I have been having a Twitter conversation with Martin Byford-Rew the IT Manager at Thomas Deacon Academy in Peterborough and other about finding stale accounts in active directory, now I do not have that concern as I use an AD tools which runs overnight and creates or archives accounts as pupils, staff and parents arrive at or leave Twynham, but more of that in a later post.

SharePoint 2010 Web Apps, Where’s the Save Button

I have been using SharePoint 2010 for quite a while now but it was only yesterday that I tried the Excel, PowerPoint and Onenote web apps having limited myself to using the Word web apps all throughout our testing phase of our SharePoint 2010 deployment.
So it was only when I was using these apps that I noticed that there is no save button but they save dynamically as you use them. So for anyone else that cannot find the save button please see the images below.

Office 2010 Getting Closer

On the Microsoft Office website you can now find details of the free upgrades from Office 2007 to Office 2010. The Technology Guarantee programme gives you a free upgrade for customers that purchase and activate a qualifying Office 2007 between March 5th 2010 and September 30th 2010 there are of course conditions but questions are answered on the website. I am a great believer in keeping not only my network machines patched but also my home laptop having been caught out once many years ago I check my home laptop for updates very regularly, so this morning I checked and was surprised to see “Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows 7 (KB976002)” as an important update.

How To Change The maximum file size Upload in SharePoint 2010

Another new feature you may have seen in SharePoint 2010 is the drop folder this is basically a way to set up one folder for users to upload files to and it will automatically route the files to the appropriate locations that you have previously setup.

Now that we had all of our media files in one location it just came down to the delivery method and media library look and feel below you can see a screenshot of our media library
This gateway page is made up of basically 3 elements the media document library a search box and a recently added list. The only thing left to add was the delivery method, this could have been a list with hyperlinks to the videos but the best solution we found was ASX files and example of which can be seen below.
