Functions Used In Calculated Columns In SharePoint Lists
Stacy Draper
A question that I've had on the back burner for quite some time is what are the functions in SharePoint calculated columns.  I've taken a cursoury look here and there and never found the answer.  I've recently been passing direct messages via twitter to span class="fn"AndrewClark,/span @sharepointac, and he sent me a message that had the answer I've been looking for a href="http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointtechnology/CH011711171033.aspx" shape="rect"http://office.microsoft.com/en-us [read].

Working with existing SharePoint views from code
Stacy Draper
Every week I have to fax a form that has data that I keep in a log, a SharePoint list actually.  The recipient expects it to be done by hand, I guess there aren’t many people who go the extra step and make a SharePoint list.  I was just hoping to export the information to an excel spreadsheet,  but the spreadsheet confused them.  They just wanted to see their little for filled out by hand.  I don’t like to do anything by hand. Using GDI+ to load up the form as a bitm [read].

Audio stops working in Windows Server 2008
Stacy Draper
My workstation operating system (OS) is Windows Server 2008, for a number of reasons, but mostly so I can better describe what settings need to be set where.  Everyone once in a while my audio has quite working.  Actually on any server os my audio quits a lot.  It usually comes back when I reboot but I don’t reboot but every 15 to 30 days.  I have a bazillion things open and rebooting is always a pain in the butt. Start > Administrative Tools > Services > Restart [read].

Ferrari Case Study
Stacy Draper
I just read the Ferrari case study and was surprised by this statement, “Site traffic has increased by 237 percent, with a 150 percent increase in unique visitors.” SharePoint by itself doesn’t increase traffic.  Understanding how search engines look at your site and being able to manage the content search engines look at increases traffic.  The article did state that it’s now easier manage content than it was in their previous java based version.  It almost sounded like [read].

I may pick and choose who I work with but at least Irsquo;m not asking the government for money
Stacy Draper
pHere’s a page out of my Sunday morning.#160; I went to Chrysler.#160; I heard that they had some pretty good deals so I thought I’d go find out more about it. Having crappy luck online and being in the area to big one that didn’t close down recently I thought I’d just drop in.#160; Just on a whim and maybe walk out with a car.#160; I just need adaptive cruise control and a few other things and I’d be set.#160; Walking into the dealership I saw this sweet little Dodge Challenger and it [read].

An invitation to Google Wave Developer Sandbox
Stacy Draper
pSo I just got an email about Google wave.#160; Basically it was a URL sending me to a Google docs form where I entered what I would like my user name to be and stuff like that.#160; It says in a few days that I should get some additional information./p [read].

I guess Telligent is not free for community any more
Stacy Draper
pAfter some careful deliberation I decided to put a href="http://www.sfspug.com"www.sfspug.com/a on Telligent’s community server.#160; I knew they were coming out with a new version soon and I thought it would be good because then I could see the older version and migrate to the newer one.#160; What I hadn’t counted on was that they wouldn’t have a new community server community edition.#160; Well I went to the site and I couldn’t find it.#160; So I went to the Tellignet’s contact page [read].

Intellisense, Reflection and namespace.xml
Stacy Draper
pSo here I was working on a project that required me to look at existing .DLLs and figure out what objects, constructors, methods and properties there were.#160; I’m also required to return some friendly data, like the stuff you get from intellisense in Visual Studio.#160; I thought this was all done via System.Reflection and you can get some of it, but the friendly content just isn’t there./p pAfter spending a ton of time looking through the System.Reflection members and looking again and l [read].

F#
Stacy Draper
pSo I just downloaded Visual Studio 2010 and in the time that it took to doanload and install I went and did some research on F#.#160; I’ve been feeling a little behind lately so when I saw F# I thought, “Great! What happened to D# and E#?#160; I’m still back over here on C#!”/p pTurns out that F# is for functional programming - in short passing functions#160; and results around through pipes.#160; It’ll remind some of PowerShell.#160; A lot of the examples out there now are very mathe [read].

Migration to sitefitiny
Stacy Draper
pI just migrated from CMS 2002 to sitefinity.  I looked at a lot of different options and decided that sitefinity was best for me.  The migration was fairly strait forward with a few minor hiccups here and there.  All in all I’m pretty happy with sitefinity./p h3How I decided which WCM tool to use./h3 pFirst of all free was a qualifier.  If I couldn’t get it for free then it didn’t get looked at.  A logo at the bottom of the page is a small price to pay for me, which is the requiremen [read].

It's a well known fact that versioning webparts is a real pain in the butt. Big Jim in DC and I have been pondering, searching the Internet and discussing what are some good ways to version web parts and features. Today we decided to do something about it and came up with a simple strategy. BDC Meta Man reads writes and could be used to make more robust lookups?
Stacy Draper
Nick Swan and crew has just hit a home run with the newest release of the BDC Meta Man. Now you can create, read and update data that resides outside of SharePoint. This request comes to me all the time, "How can we use SharePoint to maintain data in our _______ system?". The thinking is they want to have the same functionality that a list has but be able to point to their own data store. Well, now with the new BDC Meta Man, you can do even better. Because the BDC Meta Man generates [read].

My pal Pirooz just showed me http://www.justsharepointjobs.com/ This is a pretty interesting site not only does it have jobs but it seems to have some pretty good references. They list some blogs and sites, but they also listed conferences. I thought that was cool. You can't even get a list of all up coming conferences from the Microsoft site. Solution
Stacy Draper
Patrick Tisseghem has just written a couple of articles for MSDN on building Windows SharePoint Services solution with Visual Studio 2005 Extensions. 12 Laws Every Blogger Should Be Aware Of
Stacy Draper
I just read "12 Important U.S. Laws Every Blogger Needs to Know" (I can't figure out who wrote it), it's about laws that affect bloggers. A few of these points have been debated for a while amongst fellow bloggers. The article details appropriate behaviour to keep us out of trouble, but the thing that I liked most is that it had examples in some places where the law is very confusing. Some interesting topics include linking to images and what to do if someone totally rips off your conte [read].

A SharePoint developer class
Stacy Draper
On my birthday, Glen Block, blogged about a new developer course geared to SharePoint AND developers, what a gift! Now when people ask me how to get started with SharePoint development I can send them to https://www.microsoftelearning.com/eLearning/offerDetail.aspx?offerPriceId=119608 Well he didn't really do it for me but it's a very nice coincidence! DevConnections
Stacy Draper
I just got back from devConnections. It's actually still going on, but I had to come home and forage. I'm not going to make the mistake of writing a blog post like I did for the MVP summit again, but suffice it to say I met a lot of people and cemented more relationships. Lawrence Liu was to do the key note presentation and he was stuck in Chicago, on his birthday no less, so I ended up having 2 hour to prepare for it. I literally had 15 minutes of fame, it was a lot of fun and the be [read].

Dropping support for the /3gb switch for good reason
Stacy Draper
A KB article came out March 8th 2007 indicating that the /3gb switch is no longer available. This is because on x32 we only have 4GB to work with, now on an x64 we have much more addressable memory. The /3gb switch actually choked the kernel by moving a gig to the user mode from the kernel. This actually caused more problems than it solved so the switch was removed in SP2. This is a classic example of software desperately trying to make up for hardware shortcomings. The solution - bu [read].
