Creating a Content Type Inheriting from Event
Susan Henry Body: If you need to create a content type that inherits from the “Event” content type, you will notice that OOTB it’s not listed in the List Content Types group. That’s because it is in the _Hidden group and in order to use it you will have to be sneaky enough to move it out of there! So, in order to do this you’ll need to go to a Calendar on your site and go to the Settings page. From there you need to turn on Content Type Management in the Advanced Settings. Neat Find: Visio Stencils for SharePoint
Susan Henry Body: So, recently I needed to create a process flowchart for a reservation system built on top of SharePoint. Being the perfectionist that I am, I really wanted to find some Visio stencils or shapes that represented the SharePoint objects I was referring to in my flowchart. There was nothing in Visio 2007 that came close and I really didn’t want to create anything myself, so I started digging. I came across quite a few downloads on the Microsoft site that had some neat shapes I could use, bu [read]. Posted: Mon, Oct 19th '09 |
New SharePoint 2010 Stuff @ Microsoft.com
Susan Henry Body: Today, on day 1 of SP Conference a TON of new SharePoint 2010 content is being released all over the web. It will be hard to keep up with it all, but just wanted to share some of the stuff I’ve found this morning. On the Microsoft Download Center there are lots of new diagrams and articles that have been released today. Check out this list below and check back for more as I find them. Uncustomized vs Customized Pages in SharePoint
Susan Henry Body: In SharePoint 2003 the concept of Ghosting and Unghosting described what happened to your files when they were modified or customized. With SharePoint 2007 that terminology and the process by which customizations are handled has changed drastically. Instead SharePoint 2007 and WSS 3.0 are built on top of ASP.NET 2.0 and use the Virtual Page Parser. Thus, the process has changed and so has the name. When I took a look at the WSS 3.0 server I realized that they had originally performed the Basic Installation, which is a single-server option that installs SQL Server Express Embedded Edition on the same box. Hiding Themes on your SharePoint Server
Susan Henry Body: Let’s say you are running a corporate intranet using SharePoint and you’ve got a standard for all the sites that will be created. The team has decided upon a “look” and want all the sites to follow suit and stick to these standards. This is fairly common, so typically the need arises to lockdown those extra themes that you DON’T want your users to apply. The good news is that themes are pretty simple in SharePoint. They are stored in the 12 Hive under TEMPLATE and each theme h [read]. Posted: Fri, Jul 10th '09 |
Leveraging a Lookup Column
Susan Henry Body: Let's say you have a list of Customers on your top-level site within your site collection and then a Project list on a subweb (AKA subsite) for a specific department. If you wanted to create a lookup column in your Projects Document Library that will pull the Title field from the Customers list, you CAN'T! You can't because that Customers list is on the top-leve site and from the Projects site you cannot see it... Or can you??? You can if you use site columns or a content type. A lo [read]. SharePoint Branding: Use CSS to Transform Top Nav
Susan Henry Body: In my last two posts I talked about how you can use CSS to easily customize the look and feel of your Quick Launch. The great thing about using CSS to make these changes is that you’re merely attaching your custom CSS files to the original Master Page, not unghosting anything. This is good news for those of you want to or have to avoid modifying the OOTB master page and core.css. Unghosting means that you’re taking the original master page and CSS that were stored on the web server it [read]. Posted: Wed, Jul 8th '09 |
SharePoint Branding: Quick Launch Quick Fixes Pt. 2
Susan Henry Body: In the second part of my Quick Launch branding series I’m going to add some more CSS to strip out the OOTB quick launch styles and add my own styles. You can do a lot using just CSS to rebrand a SharePoint site and keep the functionality intact. A lot of people want to redesign the navigation, but don’t want to lose the ability to manage navigation links through the UI as a site owner. This presents a challenge for designers and developers because they need to find a happy medium betwe [read]. Posted: Tue, Jul 7th '09 |

What version of SharePoint am I running??
Susan Henry Body: On twitter the other day someone asked how they would go about finding out the version of SharePoint they are working with. A flood of responses came in because there are several ways to do this, it just depends on what level of access you have for the site, server, etc. Here’s an easy way to tell the version as long as you have access to the settings.aspx page. You can go to Site Settings and see the Version listed there under the Site Information heading at the top, like so… This [read]. Posted: Wed, Jul 1st '09 |
Display Random Tips & Tricks in a Web Part
Susan Henry Body:
I was asked by a customer if it was possible to take a list of MS Office Tips & Tricks and display a random tip on the homepage of their SharePoint portal every time a user hits/refreshes the page. I had seen something similar at the End User SharePoint site. They have a couple posts that show you how to use a Content Editor Web Part (CEWP) with some jQuery to do just that for a "Quote of the Day" web part.
Essentially, what I'm looking for is the same thing, so I basically le [read]. Posted: Thu, Jun 25th '09 |
Simple Spam Blocker for your SharePoint blog...

Thanks Mike for sharing this easy fix, because honestly when you're pressed for time, quick fixes are pure gold... Speaking of gold, I was really tired of getting comments from someone trying to sell me gold watches! :P

IE6: The butt of all Web Design Jokes
Susan Henry Body:
I saw this post today that made me laugh and think back to the days when I was none the wiser. I'm talking about this awesomely funny and cute cartoon by John Martz (RobotJohnny.com) about IE6, the ugly duckling of the browser bunch.
It makes me laugh now because after spending the past two years working in web design, specifically SharePoint web design more recently, I've come to loathe this browser. The sad part is a lot of your clients are STILL using it!!! So, that means ex [read]. Posted: Thu, Jun 18th '09 |
In-Browser Tricks
Susan Henry Body: Lately I’ve been working on finding as many customizations and enhancements that can be made to SharePoint sites through the browser, using CEWPs or other tricks. A lot of companies put their SP environment on lock-down and try to discourage employees from customizing the OOTB sites with SP Designer. There are a lot of reasons why this is necessary in certain environments, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t find some workarounds to spice up your site. There are a lot of blogs out t [read]. Problems Uninstalling SharePoint
Susan Henry Body: During the course of building out my SharePoint VM for development purposes I’ve found the need to recalculate my course here and there. This meant I needed to uninstall SharePoint Server 2007, but it turned out that this was easier said than done. When I attempted to uninstall through Add/Remove Programs the installer would just quit. There was no message to explain why, but it never started the uninstall process. Of course I looked through the error logs and saw some of the clues as to [read]. Posted: Tue, May 26th '09 |
Error When Starting Services on SharePoint VM
Susan Henry Body: If you get either of the following errors when trying to start a service on your SharePoint VM server there’s a pretty straightforward reason why… - An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: OSearch (Administrator) - SPSearch (Administrator) This is simply because SharePoint expects a user name in domain\user format. Hiding and Moving the View All Site Content Link
Susan Henry Body: Sometimes, whether you're creating a public site that will enable anonymous access to visitors, or you're creating a site internal to an organization, you may want to hide the View All Site Content (VASC) link. This link sits in the quick launch and gives users access to a page listing all the content within your SharePoint site. It's an easy enough task, but there are quite a few ways to accomplish the same thing. The link itself is part of a Sharepoint:SPSecurityTrimmedControl in the ma [read]. Posted: Mon, May 25th '09 |
VMware Server bridging debacle
Susan Henry Body: This post is actually about VMware, but since many SharePoint peeps out there have to create virtual machines to setup a development/test environment, it’s still relevant… Basically, I show a little bit of favoritism towards VMware for a few reasons. First, it’s a pretty slick platform and I prefer it over Virtual PC or Virtual Server. Second, the forums are AWESOME. If you ever get stuck with something the people on the VMware forums probably have an answer for you. These peeps are [read]. Posted: Thu, May 21st '09 |
Error Activating Publishing Features in MOSS

MOSS Search Web Part Mods
Susan Henry Body:
In MOSS the Advanced Search page is actually built on a search web part that is generated via an XML file. The XML file contains all the elements that will be displayed on the page such as the choice of languages, the choices in the drop-down menus, etc. Let's say you don't want the options for French, Spanish, etc. to display b/c your entire site is built and populated with only English content.

Workflow Catch 22 when Versioning is Turned On
