Word 2010 Technical Preview and SharePoint

A warning for users of the Word 2010 Technical Preview and SharePoint. Following guidance from the Microsoft SharePoint Product Team Blog, do not use a "fake proxy" for any kind of workaround.
Specifically, if you encounter the issue where documents, including Word and Excel types, do not open when selected from a web browser, save the file locally before opening in Word 2010 or Excel 2010.

Creating a Web Part for SharePoint is basically the same as creating a generic ASP.Net web part. My Brother Chief Scientist on a Jason Expedition

How to move a site in SharePoint, Let me count the ways

Someone just asked me about moving a site with subsites to a new location, but didn’t have details. Without knowing the situation, here are some of the countless options with considerations: 1) Site Collection level backup and restore only applies if the subsite is a site collection and you can overwrite the exisiting top level site use stsadm -o backup and stsadm -o restore 2) stsadm -o export and stsadm -o import may require manual touch up but works on site level, not limited [read].

GPISync your MotionX Track

I’ve been using MotionX Lite on my iPhone while I drive around neighborhoods looking at houses. Today, I found out that you can share tracks by email. Combine that with the GPISync code from Google Code downloads and you could add the latitude and longitude EXIF data to photos from a non GPS enabled camera.
I’m going to try it out and let you see the results.

The Wall Street Journal has coverage of Obama's pick of the current CTO of the District of Columbia as the first CIO of the United States.
Vivek Kundra is the man who created an internal Wiki for the DC Government that took off on their intranet. He's a big proponent of online collaboration. He won't be mandating SharePoint for all government agencies, but how about ObamaBlog and ConstitutionWiki? Twitter feeds for pork?

Blogs and Wikis becoming more recognized in business

I'm a big fan of blogs and wikis, tools built into Microsoft SharePoint. I recently found two great examples and a new White Paper that I'd like to share.
Liz Elizondo, a San Antonio SharePoint User Group Member shares a great example of SharePoint wiki use from her experience. They transferred Operations Manuals on CD ROM to a wiki with a few issues, but to great response.

SharePoint Unit Testing Guidance and Typemock

Back in August, 21apps blog featured an article highlighting the Microsoft Patterns & Practices Guidance on SharePoint. It's an excellent resource. One of the first things on their list is Unit Testing. Andrew also highlights their video on unit testing with a third party product called Typemock Isolator, read more below.

Followup to SharePoint Contacts List on a Map from Google

Windows SharePoint Services 4.0 named and breaking changes

In the first vNext news since my SharePoint 2010 post, Microsoft has identified Windows SharePoint Service 4.0 by name in a CustomListView knowledge base article. In addition, the Pre-Upgrade Checker that links to the Knowledge Base Article naming the new version identifies a number of breaking changes.

Number 69 on Joel Oleson’s Twitter List

I'm number 69 on the Top 100 SharePoint Twitters! It's ironic because my feedburner stats show most of my SharePoint Blog traffic coming from twitter. Really, twitter has been the best way to get the word out about my SharePoint content and I'm a happy user. I also enjoy following my younger brother and some friends and automatically updating my Facebook status through Twitter. So overall, I'd be happy even if I didn't make the list.

Custom Field Type Webcast from San Antonio SharePoint User Group

Travis Lingenfelder gave a presentation today by Live Meeting for the San Antonio SharePoint User Group in the place of a December meeting at a physical location.
