As some of our South African community members know already http://dotnet.org.za is officially dead and it won’t be coming back. It’s been dying slowly over tha past 6 months and some time around October last year most of us were unable to post any new posts due to maintenance issues.

With a heavy heart I decided to leave Business Connexion (http://www.bcx.co.za), my last day was on 30th of October 2009 (my daughter’s 2nd birthday).

Item Level Permission in SharePoint 2007

Question around Item Level permission in SharePoint 2007 came out so many times by now, well I lost the count. It is one of the most fundamental requirements of creating client centric SharePoint solutions, and it builds on concepts of Personalization and Audience Targeting, exactly where these two fail, and that is to provide appropriate security trimmings to the personalised content.

Wow what a great TechEd, I don't remember having so much fun.
Looking at the whole thing initially it just seemed like I'll be too busy with all the sessions and interviews that I'll never have time to properly catch up with anyone never mind have some fun and relax, boy was I wrong.

Important Information on SharePoint Service Pack 2

If you downloaded it and installed it (and if you haven't realised yet) please note that SP2 resets your licensing information and (to quote further) product expiration date is improperly activated. This means SharePoint will expire as though it was a trial installation 180 days after SP2 is deployed. The activation of the expiration date will not affect the normal function of SharePoint up until the expiration date passes. Furthermore, product expiration 180 days after SP2 installation will [read].

Few updates regarding the new SharePoint/Office release

Ok so more (unofficial yet non NDA) info on the new version of SharePoint.
So first of all Microsoft is still very hard at work on Office 14 (which actually should've been 13 but it seems like there is more than just a few superstitious people at Microsoft Office Product Team).
There is no clear indication on when the new version will be released and some sceptics are even talking about it being released in 2010. Uncertainty is also evident from the fact that the date for this year's S [read].

Updating ListView Web Part Views in SharePoint 2007

Recently I got a question about a similar task that I had earlier last year and it involved a case where there were many (and I mean many) SharePoint 2007 sites and subsites containing webparts that had views showing certain SharePoint list information. However customer later realised that they needed the webpart views to contain the same view as the default view of the SharePoint list. Creating solutions with Business Data Catalog - Cape Town Event Afterthoughts

Workflow Foundation .NET 4.0 not quite the cousin of Workflow Foundation 3.0/3.5

Check this out, it appears that WF 4.0 is a completely new framework, not related in any way to WF 3.0/3.5.
Good news is that you can still use old 3.0/3.5 activities as long as you wrap them in a interop activity.

Following bunch of announcements about .NET 4.0, ADO.NET team makes a not so surprising announcement that LINQ to SQL is dead in favour of the .NET Entity Framework (http://blogs.msdn.com/adonet/archive/2008/10/29/update-on-linq-to-sql-and-linq-to-entities-roadmap.aspx).

Updated SharePoint RSS Aggregator Web Part

I've decided to start using CodePlex so I uploaded SharePoint RSS Aggregator Web Part that I posted some months earlier (http://dotnet.org.za/zlatan/archive/2008/06/06/multiple-rss-aggregator-web-part-example.aspx).
I took this opportunity to update the web part as well (actually on request from some people that are using it), so I changed it to use LINQ for parsing the XML data.
I also fixed up a small issue with filtering tag/category terms.

So you have the following error: "Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account has access to this content, or add a crawl rule to crawl this content" in your Event Log and you have no clue why your Search Content Service Account can't access the data for indexing, although it has all the right permissions and you double checked that it does.

SharePoint Conference in Slovenia Afterthoughts..........................

Wow what a great time I had, with great people, great food in a great country that is Slovenia.
Being one of the foreign speakers we were first welcomed with a dinner in one of the Slovenia's traditional restaurants and wine cellars for some wine tasting and later some deer, wild boar and pheasant specialities, what a feast that was.

OpenXML SDK Version Jun08

Google officially enters the South African Market (Public and Private Sector) with their first SA Partner Company - Faritec

Multiple RSS Aggregator Web Part Example

How to use Web Part Custom Properties in SharePoint 2007 and WSS 3.0

It's so weird how so many people ask you the same thing around the same time sometimes, anyway I've had some request around on how to create custom properties for Web Parts in SharePoint, more to the point, on how to get them to categorise and appear in the "Modify Web Part" panel.

Using PeopleEditor Control with Web Parts in SharePoint 2007/WSS 3.0

Ever wanted to borrow that cool AJAX like control in SharePoint 2007 (or WSS 3.0) that lets you pick and resolve users so that you can manage those users/groups and their permissions.
The control I'm talking about is PeopleEditor (aka People Picker) and there's not much documentation out there, and the examples are not very helpful.
At some point in time last year I decided to investigate this control and find out how to get resolved items out of it, as I needed to use it and abuse it [read].

South African Business Intelligence User Group Launch in Cape Town, a Success!! (Post Event Info)

Wow that was an awesome event, and perfect way start yet another great user group/community in Cape Town and Western Cape (we rule!!) and I'm proud that I was part of it. The event that was represented by prominent BI people from all sides of our industry also featured a brilliant presentation by John Swanepoel of Shoprite on one of the best examples I’ve seen on how BI should be done (Shoprite BI case study), I want to thank him for that and I hope to see more of his work in near future.

Debugging Web Parts in SharePoint 2007

Ok in my previous article I covered basic SharePoint 2007 Web Part Development, (this is another thing I've been asked a lot) one important thing when it comes to development especially more complex web parts is debugging and stepping through the code.
